Murmurised 03:40
MURMURISED We try to live a little lighter Like featherdown The love of life a little stronger, We’re all rising now And the new world ahead of you Was hiding in the rolling of the road It’s like with starlings We are all often so lit up and taken - murmurised. A loom that trails its threads behind you A smooth steering wheel A hand that holds from dusk till downtime The rhythm of steel When all the world beyond your hand Was hiding in the rolling of the road Like with starlings We are so often all lit up and taken Out of ourselves - murmurised.
2.
THE SMELL OF TROUBLE Forest fires follow you Fast as the wind will carry them I’ve burnt my fingers many times But I can’t resist Following you ’Tis the wind carries them The smell of trouble
3.
THE INNOCENT WIN How will the innocent win? When the blinds are always drawn and the eyes fall low And the carnival goes like a praying, long 'bye' I want a feel of whisky Cool brow I'd wrap a warm surprise with your lover boy hand There is always someone There is always someone who'll keep you down And no longer can I see, Even see the enemy. They lurk below my radar Too late, I'm afraid. Who would have thought it was a thing? Who would have thought it was a likely thing? Too late I'm afraid We never heard the warning bell Just a tear Just a moanin' And the struggles of the lonely.

Michaela 02:30
MICHAELA All our lives we’ve waited for a chance to fly Can you really wonder why Why Michaela won’t, why Michaela won’t Follow the rules any more? We found the secret passage, ran and ran past clanging pipes Learned the reason to be alive and Why Michaela won’t follow the rules any more. Life begins in the hallways As it ends in the hallways We get high in the hallways Freedom cries in the hallways How they sigh in the hallways Let them lie in the hallways Happy days.
5.
Local Envy 03:20
LOCAL ENVY They were diddling the till Diddlin’ And everybody knows Greying, playing, praying Vile and lazy and wanting The spicks and the specks of your meanderings The shoes, the clues time leaves behind And wherever you go There’s a local envy.
6.
THE MIRROR OF THE OTHER The mirror of the other Is where you find a mutual tongue A gentle place to reach across the great divide To an isle of innocence. The mirror of the other Is where to search for clues - All is soon light All is soon light All is soon light Islands, islands, islands. In between the mourning Reach across the great divide To an isle of innocence.
7.
Caramelised 04:32
CARAMELISED Life just glitters in between her lashes like a dream She’s putting on her bravest face to Caramelise it. She sees across the chimney tops Dark window, face, a hand waves She turns the spoon between her lips to Caramelise it. The little things, the little things Caramelise it. Oh, and we will be free again Oh, and we will be wild again
8.
SILKY AND TAR Harking back again we always Threw ourselves into the bottom of it Like there was no tomorrow or Nobody else in the world. The old days are gone, my love Those mad old days are gone, my love. And the crows were always circling Hanging out for the dead Silky and tar, silky and tar. What a bitchy crowd In the tops of the trees. Right above our kissing heads. Those mad old days are gone, my love. Those mad old days are gone, my love.

about

‘Scapa Foolscap’ is the the long-awaited 8th album from UK duo Pinkie Maclure and John Wills, aka PUMAJAW.

They first met as artists individually signed to Beggar’s Banquet records in the 90s (John with The Hair and Skin Trading Company, Pinkie as a solo artist) and worked together solidly for the next 25 years, releasing 7 albums through Fire Records and their own label. They made their own films, booked their own extensive tours, and created an award-winning, experimental multimedia show exploring film noir, until in 2015 the duo decided it was time to take a well-earned break.

While Pinkie turned to visual art, John went to spend time by the shipwreck-strewn, icy waters of Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, recording the unique atmospheres of the archipelago which he developed into a series of soundscapes reminiscent of Philip Glass or Boards of Canada.
Intended only as rough sketches, (hence ‘foolscap’) Pinkie eventually persuaded him to let her hear them and was inspired to add her distinctive vocals, often compared to Nico, Tim Buckley or Kate Bush.

Over the next 6 years, an album of music written without the expectation of ever releasing it emerged organically and is Pumajaw’s most fresh and beautiful to date.

Opener ‘Murmurised’ is inspired by human fascination with starling murmurations and the reasons so many of us turned to nature for comfort during lockdown.

Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Adrian Crowley (Chemikal Underground Records) duets with Pinkie on ‘The Mirror of the Other’, in a call-and-response cry for human empathy, echoing from island to island.

‘Local Envy’ is an addictive, almost-pop song while ‘The Innocent Win’ is a krautrock-esque, epic slow burner.

“A voice that is nothing less than thrillingly world class. This is adventurous music from one of the country’s deeply hidden artistic treasures.” UNCUT
'Like some terrifying infant, Pinkie is bewitching as she laments over ominous soundscapes made by spectral John Wills. DIY
